What’s your background, and why did you decide to do the SQE?
Megan studied Law with International Law at University of Birmingham (2022). After two years of unsuccessful applications, she secured a training contract that included full-time SQE prep and support beginning September 2024.
How did you prepare, and what made the biggest difference in your success?
The most impactful factor was completing extensive practice questions across all subjects. While her training provider offered structured teaching, supplementary resources like Law Drills and Revise SQE books proved invaluable for breaking down content and identifying frequently-tested concepts.
What was the hardest part, and how did you push through it?
The sheer volume of material proved most challenging. Fifteen weeks before exams, she created a personalized revision timetable using ChatGPT covering daily topics with flexibility for breaks. She also created flashcards targeting weak areas and prioritized thorough revision of difficult subjects like Tort Law.
If you had to do it again, what would you do differently?
She would emphasize Functioning Legal Knowledge (FLK) earlier, as it comprises half the SQE1 exam and contains the most difficult questions. Starting with Revise SQE books would have built a stronger foundation before tackling detailed materials.
Final advice
- Prioritize weakest subjects rather than avoiding them
- Know when to let go - perfection isn’t necessary; you can pass with approximately one-third of answers incorrect
